THE GIRL SCOUT LAW IS IN YOUR HANDS

Go to Version 2
To say that your honor is to be trusted means that you can accept and carry responsibility. It takes strength to do this. When we close our hand and extend the LEFT thumb upward it stands for approval and this important part of the law says:

I WILL DO MY BEST TO BE.... HONEST AND FAIR

The next finger is your pointing finger. It points to those things your are proud to be associated with or point out a place you are needed.. On this finger stands:

I WILL DO MY BEST TO BE.... FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL

The next is a very large finger -- always large enough to accept responsibility but yet share a part of yourself. When we think of this finger it reminds us:

I WILL DO MY BEST TO BE....CONSIDERATE AND CARING

The next fingers is your ring finger or finger of love because it has a vein that runs directly to your heart. Standing up for what you believe in is not always easy. So this fingers reminds us:

I WILL DO MY BEST TO BE....COURAGEOUS AND STRONG

The next very small finger is the one that you might extend just a little bit if you were drinking tea at a party and this finger helps us to remember to be polite. In Girl Scouting we learn that everyone is equal, no matter their size, color or cultural background. This finger says:

I WILL DO MY BEST TO BE.... RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT I SAY AND DO.

The little finger on your RIGHT hand is small and helpless. It reminds us that everyone in the world needs love and attention. This fingers tell us:

I WILL DO MY BEST TO ....RESPECT MYSELF AND OTHERS.

The next three fingers always stand together, in the Girl Scout Sign. The three parts of the law that stand on these fingers go together also and they can be remembered by the abbreviation for October - OCT, which is the birthday month of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low: O = Obey, C = Careful, T = TOMORROW.

OBEY: I WILL DO MY BEST TO.... RESPECT AUTHORITY

CAREFUL: I WILL DO MY BEST TO.... USE RESOURCES WISELY

TOMORROW: I WILL DO MY BEST TO.... MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE, AND

The last thumb is your part of the law. Have you ever tried washing your hands without your thumb? You'll find you can't really get clean without this finger, you need to be part of a team. It says:

I WILL DO MY BEST TO....BE A SISTER TO EVERY GIRL SCOUT.

THE GIRL SCOUT LAW AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

When your girls repeat the Girl Scout Law, do they start out strong, and then fade away to “mumble, mumble, mumble?” This finger game can help you and your girls remember all the Girl Scout Laws, in the correct order too!

1. It takes strength to be truthful in what we say and do, and to treat others the way we wish to be treated. Our strong thumb helps us be: HONEST AND FAIR

2..Girl Scouts love to make new friends and keep the old, and we always lend a hand to help others. This pointer finger leads the way. We are: FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL.

3.  Our tallest finger reminds us to do our very best to care for our family, our friends, our pets and the environment. Girl Scouts are: CONSIDERATE AND CARING

4.  It is important that we hold fast to our values and face challenges head on. In our heart we find courage and strength. Our ring finger has a vein that runs directly to our heart and helps us be: COURAGEOUS AND STRONG

5.  This little finger may seen small, but it reminds us to take a stand for what we believe, and to be responsible for our actions. This finger says “I must be: RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT I SAY AND DO

6.  We strive to be confident individuals, and we also know that each one of us is special and unique. This dainty little finger says: I RESPECT MYSELF AND OTHERS

These next three fingers stand together to make the Girl Scout Sign,

just like these three laws stand together.

  7.  We respect our parents, our teachers and our Girl Scout leaders. We: RESPECT AUTHORITY

  8.  We must take care of our resources, such as endangered animals, our farmland, our family history,

and our money, or these resources will not last. It is important that we: USE RESOURCES WISELY

9.      There are many things we can do to bring a smile to someone’s face, and to bring the world closer together. We can: MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

10.   Thumbs up for Girl Scouting! We are proud to: BE A SISTER TO EVERY GIRL SCOUT

Of course, we know that being able to say the Girl Scout Law perfectly is not the most important thing. Just as idle hands are useless. So, let’s learn to the Girl Scout Law and live it!
