Girl Scout Passport Program

I adapted this program from something I found on www.PatchworkDesigns.net, that was for the State of Virginia only. I decided that it was such a neat idea that I wanted to put a local spin on it for my Girl Scout Troop. Here are the instructions:

§  Select 10 Historic sites in your area. You can usually order a free county visitor’s guide from your county for ideas.

§  Create a Passport – approx. 2-3/4” wide x 4” high.

o   I purchased a Jolee’s By You brand passport used for scrapbooking (Figure 1, available at most craft or scrapbooking stores, or online). [One could easily be made by cutting 1 piece of navy card stock to 5-5/8” x 4” and folding in half; and 5 pieces of light blue paper to the same measurements; and stapling once in the middle. Use a corner rounder for the two outside corners.]

§  On the first page of the passport, glue on a picture of the patch that is the final objective (Figure 2 – We used Historically Speaking Pennsylvania from PatchworkDesigns.net). Include the following instructions on this first page under the picture: “Visit each historic site in this passport. Have it signed and dated by a representative of that location when you visit. Return to your Girl Scout Leader, and you will receive your Historically Speaking patch!”

 §  On the inside front cover, paste a photo of the Girl Scout, specify her name, Girl Scout Council, and Troop number.  

§  On the remaining pages, label the sites in your area that you want them to visit, and include the addresses. (We selected sites in Bucks County, PA. and Historic Philadelphia, PA.).

 §  This program will help the Troop Leader(s) to plan some field trips, and if the girls can’t make the field trips, the locations should be close enough for them to visit with their parents. This is also suitable for all age levels. This can also be adapted for whichever purposes you want – perhaps you only want to do theme parks or some other type of theme. As long as there is an associated patch as the final reward, you can do almost anything with it.
