The Cubans declared independence and launched a guerrilla war against Spanish authorities. Lacking internal support, the rebellion collapsed in 1878. Many Cuban rebels then fled to the U.S. where they began planning a new revolution. One of the exiled leaders was Jose Marti, poet and writer. The U.S. and Cuba become linked economically. These ties created a crisis in 1894, when the U.S. imposed new tariffs. Because of the economic crisis it started a new rebellion in February 1895.
