By the 1600s cotton imported from India had become popular so British merchants tried to produce at home and developed the putting out system raw cotton was distirbuted to families who spun it into thread and then wove the thread into cloth in their homes. As demand grew the production had to become faster so inventions like the flying shuttle enables weavers to work faster. Also the increase in demand required bigger machines that could not be operated at home so they put them in sheds near water running the machine with water power.
