The belief that the human is "preformed" at the instant of conception and only grows in size and bulk until birth. Predominant in the middle ages, parents would send their children off to work as apprentices where they would practice their craftsmanship and become "little adults", by the time they were 12 adults didn't pay attention to the child's age or developing language and motor skills because children blended in with the adults in the workplace, festivals, and games.
