Selective media will only allow one type of microorganism to grow. Mannitol salt agar will only allow staphylococci to grow and EMB (Eosin methylene blue) will only allow Gram negative to grow so in this way they are both selective. Differential media are media that distinguish between different groups of bacteria. Within the various forms of staff, Mannitol salt will turn Staph Aureus yellow and Staph Epidermis to turn red. Within the variations of Gram negatives, E. Coli (and other lactose fermenters) will take up the dye and turn blue-black whereas lactose nonfermenters (i.e. Salmonella, Proteus and Pseudomonas) form colorless to amber colonies.
