Explanation: Classic signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus are polydipsia (excessive thirst), polyuria (excessive urination), and polyphagia (excessive appetite). Decreased appetite, lingering cough and cold, and pain on urination are not related to diabetes. Decreased appetite reflects a GI disorder; clients with Type 1 diabetes have increased appetite. Urination increased, but the urine does not necessarily smell bad. Dry skin is not uncommon, however the thirst is usually the first sign.
