The purpose of aseptic technique is to reduce the number of harmful microorganisms. Surgical asepsis is protection against infection before, during, and after surgery by using sterile technique. A sterile field is a microorganism free area that can receive sterile supplies. The patient is the center of the sterile field. The field includes the patient, the table, and other furniture covered with sterile drapes, and the personnel wearing sterile attire. The purpose of the surgical scrub is to remove debris and transient microorganisms from the hands, nails, and forearms; to reduce the residual microbial count to a minimum; and to inhibit the rapid rebound growth of microorganisms.
