Competence factor made by Streptococcus is a small peptide that is produced and secreted by every individual in the cell population. As the population gets larger, its concentration increases and it binds to a sensory protein on the cell membrane. This begins an intracellular phosphorylation cascade, resulting in production of the sigma factor SigH. This sigma factor is responsible for the expression of all genes necessary to produce the translocasome to make the cells competent. Competence factor made by Enterococcus is a pheromone. The pheromone catalyzes cell-to-cell contact and formation of the conjugation complex.
