Purpose: check infants hips for congenital dislocation (done at every physician visit until 1 yr old) Expected finding: adducting bend legs and then abducting the knees apart and then down should feel smooth and has no clicking sound. abnormal: instability feels like a clunk as the head of the femur pop back into place = a POSITIVE Ortolani sign (referral is needed)
