The Great Depression (1929-ca. 1939). Threw millions of Americans out of work. Had a major impact on the music industry. The race record market was crushed by the economic downturn. Hillbilly record sales were also affected by the depression, although not as severely as race records. Hillbilly and blues singers injected a note of social realism into popular music.
