Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware were all border states. Missouri- Important in controlling the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Sided with the South. Lincoln sent troops to make them stay with the Union Kentucky- Declared it was a neutral state. Then in September 1861 sided with the North. West Virginia- In 1863 these 50 little counties were submitted to the Union Maryland- Southern sympathizers started to destroy railroads and telegraph lines so Lincoln placed eastern Maryland under marital law Delaware- Had few slaves and support for the union was strong.
