There have always been questions of life: how did life begin, what is the meaning of life, ect. One other question was the idea of what matter is made of. In Greece, they used to think the world was made of water, air fire and earth. In fact, Greek philosophers Leucippus and Democritcus theorized that matter was made of small, indestructible particles called atoms. Then scientific knowledge emerged with the scientific method. John Dalton offered convincing evidence that supported this claim. The theory that all matter is composed of atoms was made out of observations and laws.--Three most important were Law of Conservation of Mass, Law of Definite Proportions, Law of Multiple Proportions. The atomic theory explains these laws.
