The second law of thermodynamics implies not only that we cannot win in an energy transaction, but also that we cannot break even. In every process that involves energy, some of the energy is lost to the surroundings as heat. This means that no process is perfectly efficient. This amount of energy that must be lost to the surroundings for the process to occur is nature's heat tax, an unavoidable cut of every energy transaction.
