The role of race brought on several issues as to how to proceed with the fundamentalist approach during the 1920s. Fundamentalism revolved heavily around religion and it's strict, literal interpretations. The practices of this era, for example prohibition, demonstrated that the right of individual freedom was being violated. Fundamentalists wanted Americans to be and look a certain way but the country stood for equal advancement and prosperity for all. Different opportunities for people of different backgrounds and races is what the America is known for, the beliefs and practices of the fundamentalist era proved to be un-American and it seemed a bit extreme even for the time frame. When the immigration law came into effect, progressivism came to light thus making fundamentalism seem like a radical phase. There was still some fear that allowing immigrants into America would bring revolutionary practices into the country. The courts saw it fit to make laws that would control how immigrants were able to live in America.
