During a meal:: Precapillary sphincters act as valves to regulate blood flow through capillary beds. Not all capillary beds are perfused with blood on a continuous basis. During exercise the capillary beds in the muscles are perfused with blood, while capillary beds around the GI tract are closed off to allow for sufficient blood flow to the muscles. The capillary beds around the GI tract are open during a meal and closed between meals, during exercise, and during sleep (which is also between meals).
