The chemical signal (ACh) at the neuromuscular junction is very short! Soon after ACh is released from the axon terminal, it is rapidly degraded by AChE or diffuses out of the synaptic cleft. These two mechanisms ensure that just enough ACh binds to its receptor to initiate an action potential and that the muscle fiber's response is quickly terminated.
