The strength of electrolytes is determined by how much a solute dissociates in a solution. If a solute fully dissociates into ions when in a solution it is a strong electrolyte. When a solute only partially dissociates to produce a few ions in a solution along with molecules it is a weak electrolyte. Solutions containing ions can conduct electricity because the ions can move within the solution.
